We are thrilled to share that CMS’s proposal to include the Global Malnutrition Composite Score (GMCS), developed by Avalere and stewarded by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, in the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program has been finalized. Therefore, the GMCS will be offered as 1 of the 3 electronic clinical quality measures available for hospitals to self-select to report beginning in 2024. Here are the final CY 2023 Inpatient Prospective Payment System rule and CMS’s summary fact sheet, for your reference.

We are thrilled that CMS has taken this step to support quality malnutrition care and want to thank all of our partners and stakeholders for your contributions to this achievement over the past ~10 years. We are working with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and other partners to support education for pertinent stakeholders to report on this measure (beginning in 2024) in the coming months. In the meantime, more information about the GMCS can be found on the Academy’s website and the MQii website. You can also watch the recording from an informational webinar hosted by the Academy on August 10 to learn more.
