Recent results from the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging showed that the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with rapid decreases in physical activity among many adults age 50–80 that may have reduced physical conditioning and limited mobility. Titled, “Physical Functioning and Falls During the COVID-19 Pandemic,” this poll reflects a national sample of adults age 50–80 about their physical functioning and falls since the pandemic’s start in March 2020. You can also read more about the results and the related National Poll on Healthy Aging in this Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation news story. The findings suggest an area of concern for providers caring for this population as well as the increased need for registered dietitians to provide quality nutrition care to ensure they are eating and engaging in activity needed to maintain muscle mass and overall health.
