The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) recently published an article titled, “The Prevalence of Food Insecurity Is Highest Among Americans for Whom Diet Is Most Critical to Health,”
that provides national estimates of the prevalence of food insecurity among Americans with diabetes by insurance status and receipt of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Published in Diabetes Care, this article presents information about how widespread food insecurity is among people with diabetes across different insurance types and whether food assistance is adequately addressing the problem. The authors found that food insecurity in the U.S. is most prevalent among Americans for whom a healthy diet is especially critical—ie, Medicaid enrollees with insulin-dependent diabetes and diabetes-related eye or kidney complications.
